Cycle-Smart Amherst International Cyclocross, Verge
Series #3 (UCI), UMass, Amherst, MA 10/27/02
With one of the biggest races in North
America for cyclocross, this was a great event. All the big names form around
the country were there and this made for a great race to be in and watch. Racing
for PVC was Juniors Geoff Johnson (DNF) and Morgan Maclead (who took 10th in
a huge Junior field). Paul Weiss 37th/74 raced Masters .
Boston Road Club Cyclocross at Beaver
Brook Reservation Waltham MA 10/26/02
One of the rainiest days in cyclocross
in years made this a mud festival. A fun new venue was on hand and it turned
out to have 6 inches of mud on it. It was a cold and wet event, but for those
that stuck it out, wow, we will never forget this one.
Junior racer Geoff Johnson sludged through with an excellent 1st place
win! Thirty four racers maked mud cakes in the C race, including Charles
Goldman (14th) and Shawn Corbet (17th). I slung mud in the Master race and took
15th overall. Lots of fun was had by all........hmmm submitted by Paul Weiss
Wicked Maine Cylocross II Race Gray
ME 10/20/2002
As the Maine State Championship and the
Tim Johnson Junior series premier event, the Wicked Maine cyclocross race is
becoming a well know event. This year event was better than ever. With changes
in the course design that made bunny hopping near impossible, and with long
runnups and a lot of off camber...this was a killer course. Andy Whelan did
his best on the design and everyone that I talked with, loved/hated it!
PVC had some great racers represented:
racing the the Mens C race was: George Bennington who took 4th, Charles Goldman
who took 11th and Shawn Corbet who had to abandon since his cleat came off....ooops.
In the Womens B race: Rhonda Morin did her first cyclocross race and did a respectable
finish, beating her only competitor. In the Junior 15-16 Catagory, PVC's Geoff
Johnson took second in the state championship and 4th overall, Morgan Macleod
is the new State Champion and took second overall. In the Masters race: Chis
Karam is the new state champion, Andy Whelan 7th and Paul Weiss was 9th. In
the Mens B race, Jason Pettengill was 6th and Chris Green was 16th. In the Elite
Mens race, Ron Calavolpe, who started like a charging bull, eventually had to
abandone due to a back pain.
ECV Cyclocross, Verge NE series
#2 (UCI) Lost Valley, Auburn, ME 10/13/02
With the backdrop of the Atlantic ocean this course was a real New England
Race. With a damp wind lowing off the atlantic and rain falling throughout the
day, things got wet and fast. The sandpits became the hardest obstacle and caused
many mechanical problems during the race. PVC again sported bunch of crossers.
Racing in the Masters/Juniors race: Morgan Maclead, Geoff Johnson, Andy Whelan
and Paul Weiss. In the Mens C George Benington. In the Mens B: Jason Pettengil
and Ron Calavolpe. Ron won the B race battling many laps with fellow Mainer
Matt Hersey.

Competitive Edge Cyclocross, Northfield
Mt, MA 9/29/02
With the backdrop of Northfield Mt Reservation,
this course was a classic. Lots of huge UCI hight level hurdles and long grass
sections. What made the course a killer was the long road climb in the woods,
that ended in a sandy uphill ride/run. Of of course the amazing 6 foot vertical
wall in the field was also killer. My race was fun and difficult.....a great
course. Not sure how I placed yet.but will post, along with some sick pictures
I took of the uphill and race. Submitted by Paul Weiss
NCC Cyclocross, Cummington, MA 9/28/02
A great race on the grounds of the Cummington
Fairgrounds. The evening rain kept the early races in the day difficult since
all the greass was wet and the famous upper field was bogged down on the uphill
climb. Both Morgan Macleod and I raced in the combined Junior/Master Race. Morgan
ditched me prietty early and I chased for the whole race. Morgan finished 3rd
for the Juniors! I finished 15th for the masters. A great race, and lot fo fun
with the double drop off cliff and uphill! Submittted by Paul Weiss
BCA Cyclocross, Pittsfield, MA 9/23/02
The New England Season opener for cyclocross
was great!. I was the only Mainer to make it out to the Western Berkshires.
I would not miss this race. It is a great race, situated in a town park up on
a hill on the edge of town. The course was a classic with routes through the
back fields of the school and the famous between the buildings uphill hurdle
set. I did the Masters race and had a good run. A wake up call to the fitness
level that you need for cyclocross. I took a lot of pictures, I will post this
week. Mark McCormack and Jody Grosbeck showed their early season form by winning
their races.
Green Mountain Stage Race 8/30/02-9/2/02
Northern VT
The best way to top off the road season
is a great stage race. In it's second year, this race has shown again that it
is "the beast of the east". With 3 day of hard climbs over some of
the hardest terrain in New England, this is it. PVC had several riders attempt
to finish this stage race. Racing were: Andy Whelan, Paul Weiss, Dave Harrell,
Chris Green Jr, Rhonda Morin, Morgan Macleod, Bill Black and Charles Goldman.
Joining PVC but racing for Team Saturn was Ollie Cote, who stayed with most
of us at Tom Papps house in Burlington.
Congratulations to all that raced or even
tried to. It was a very hard race, and with the hard eliminations at the Criterium
on the last day, few made the final GC. Hats off to Rhonda Morin, who finished
4th in the GC for Cat 4 Women!

Race note by Gene Landry
Congratulations to Chris Karam yesterday for winning
the 35+ Scarborough RR. It was a great sight to
see as the pack headed into the finish after 55 miles at speeds hovering around
40mph. Chris exploded from the front of this group with the help of Bob "Leadout" Baiguy and won going away while the top sprinters from around New England watched.
In the 3s, Jason and Ron had a good race with Ron grabbing a top 10 place in
a field sprint following Jason's long leadout. Great
job to all the other PVC racers. Looked like a good turnout.

Tour of the Hilltowns 7/20/02, Berkshires,
Western, MA
Many of the PVC riders made the 4 hour
trip to western Mass for the Tour of the Hilltowns. Mike Claus once again displayed
his power on the hills by staying in the top group in the 4/5 race and placing
5th. Bill Black also had a good race staying with the front group over Hawley
hill and placed 4th in the 45+ race. The rest of us, Grayden Stevens (10th in
45+) Eddie Quinn, Andy Whelan, Dave Harrell and I, later greed that that is
one big hill. My best move of the day was on the drive back home where I was
able to pass Eddie and Andy on a 3% grade, staying away all the way into Maine.

raced, taking second to Mike Vose. In the expert 40+ catagory Joel Hinshaw took

dangerous crashes, finished with a safer peleton and some surprises. Dave Harrell

that included the top racers from Maine. PVC overall standings after 10 weeks:

Very Fine Grand Prix, Littleton,
MA, June 23, 2002
PVC had some pretty good success down
at the Veryfine Grand Prix on Sunday. In the Cat 4 race, Greg Hutchinson came
in 3rd and in the Cat 5, Chris Green got together with 10 other racers to form
a breakaway group and wound up wining the sprint for 1st by half a bike length!
I, however wasn't paying attention to the guys up front and wound up working
my butt off with about five other guys to form a chase group and ended up in
12th place. Oh well, I'll just have to pay more attention next time. Submitted

Krank the Kank Time Trial May 18,
2002
I'm sure the sun was shining for the road
racers in Sunapee and the Club folks riding through Cape this fine Saturday
May morning. Somewhat different result at the corner of Routes 112 and 16/113
in New Hampshire. Riders were greeted with falling snow at the start line, a
shortened but none the less scenic time rial up the Kangamangus Highway from
Conway. With four inches of snow at the top of the Kank we were left to finish
only 17 miles up the road at the start of the first steep pitch. Joel Henshaw
took 1st in the 35+, while I settled for 4th. Paul (Yellow Look) and Dan Emery
(nice Lew wheels Dan) from CCCP also had notable rides, with Dan taking 2nd
in 45+. Usually the highlight of the Time Trial is the downhill ride back to
The start, but riding downhill with soaked clothing through the snow and watching
the plow trucks wiz by made this event epic. Nice spaghetti feed at the finish.

Bath Criterium, May 5th, 2002
A large contingent turned out for this
race in dwontown bath. I am not sure if I listed all those that raced (but let
me know). Womens race included PVC star: Rhonda Morin. Mens 4-5 race was hotly
contested with several PVC racers : Chris Linscott, Mike Loughlin, and Morgan
Macleod In the Mens 1,2,3, race, Bob B., Graydon Stevens, Neil Fitch, Jason
Pettengil, Paul Weiss, Tim Corcoran, Chris Karam all raced. Most of us were
caught or in the back of a crash that caused large problems with Bob's wheel.
Bob got back in though and had fun chasing for many miles.
Brunswick Criterium 4/28/02
PVC dominated this event once again, In
the A race, a trio of Riders got away about half way through, Jason Pettengill
(PVC) and Thad Lavelle (BRC), and Al Z.(SMCC). They staeyed clear for the rest
of the race despite efforts from PVC to try to get our big sprinters up (Chris
Linscoot and Chris Karam). Helping pull the peleton up were Brian Linscott,
Paul Weiss (who ended up on his ass in the last lap) and Zack promoter of the
pavement skin peal. Jason took the win!
In the B race PVC had a strong turnout.
PVC Junior racer Morgan Macleod pushed the pace, while the clan of Mike Loughlin,
Dwayne Clement, Mark Landry lead the pack.
Great race run by the Bowdoin College
Club. A great set of races, with 2 Maine college teams attending and pushing
the pace (Bates, Bowdoin). Great also to have Kinnin Payson and Co. officiating
a non USCF event.
