The season opener for new Enlgand. Morgan Macleod (Junior Development team member) and I decided to start the season on a bang. Since the Juniors and Masters race together, we had a good time in our first race. We had a fast start and great race, trading positions a few times. Morgan finally ditched me and ended up 4th for juniors and I finished within site somewhere. submitted by Paul Weiss

Race Report: Category 4/5 (32+)

What a great 4 days of racing. We couldn't have asked for a better weekend for the GMSR. Mike Claus and I have been strategizing for weeks and with some luck and a lot of support from Mike, it all came together.

In the prologue, up App. gap, I felt like I had left my climbing legs back at the last Tuesday night ride. Mike passed me and gave me a nudge to get a move on it. He then surged to break up the pack. I was able to hold on to third and Mike came in just behind in 5th.

In the circuit race, our strategy was to try and get a break going after the KOM. We tried on both of the loops but no one else was that interested and neither break stuck for more than a couple of miles. We both finished in the middle of a 50 man pack sprint. It was nice to see Jamie Wright from SMCC take third in a great sprint for the line.

On the day of the road race, Mike and I were both feeling a lot more confident. We had planned to see how we felt at Middlebury gap to see if we should go for the KOM. One rider went early and once again I found Mike on my left nudging me to get a move on it. He towed me up to the solo break and I was able to go around for the KOM. Things slowed considerably when the 40+ race passed us and we were fairly well rested before App. Gap. Mike and I were in good position going into the final 2 mile climb and no one wanted to work the hill. Mainly to avoid a sprint up the last 200 meters, I went with a little under 2 miles and I was able to stay away confident that Mike was going to cover anyone that tried to bridge up. In fact, Mike covered everything and then sprinted past the group for 2nd. With the KOM points and the win in the road race, I found myself in first in GC going into the crit.

Avoiding crits all summer long seemed like a fine strategy for someone who likes hills until I was forced to ride one to protect my lead in the GC. Once again, Mike was there in the front forcing the pace for much of the race, while I struggled like hell to stay in the top 20. In the end, we both finished in the top ten which was good enough to keep me in first and Mike in fourth in the overall standings.

Saco/Scarboro Race Report - Women's Cat 4 by Rhonda Morin

Saco Crit: - Little harder than I expected this year. Pace was pushed several times, which quickly dashed my hopes for an attack & solo win (but that's exactly what Marianne did in the 1/2/3!!) - Second lap (i think), teammate Jen Bailey went down on corner 6 (that quick left then right area of course). Nasty, horrible sound of metal on pavement - Next time around Jen was up in a chair on the sidelines - thankfully alert, but was bandaged and didn't look too good. - Next time around she was in the ambulance. She ended up with a broken collarbone and a very smashed helmet. She will now certainly be a strong advocate for helmet safety! - Took a prime with three to go. The 1/2/3 had just passed us, so I took advantage of an otherwise confusing moment. - Lovely sprint finish (my favorite - not!), didn't position myself as I would have liked cause I was busy suckin' wind. - 8th overall in sprint. Not happy with that, but so it goes.

Scarboro RR - 1st lap very confusing. Field played a bit dirty, but after yelling threats at them, we got it under control and settled in. - Second time up that hill hurt by golly. What's up with that? - Regained my composure on false flat and tried attacking twice on Holmes Road to no avail. I just managed to start a long train. - Really wanted to avoid a sprint finish. - 500 meters from line women were neutralized cause of men's race crash. Carnage all over the road, fire truck, confusion. - Women's pace car came to a complete stop by the fire truck. So we piled behind it. I had stopped right in back of pace car. - I've been in the position before, so knew exactly what I had to do. - As soon as that pace car hit the gas I clipped in and dashed off, apparently before anyone in the field realized it, cause with 100m to go I looked behind me and no one had jumped on. - I took the win, hands up in the air and not a soul noticed cause there was so much chaos going on with the crashes. So I just cheered myself on. Photo damn finish for me in I can't even remember how long, and no one to clap for me. - I'm calling it "How to make the best out of a chaotic situation." - It's a bike race; anything can happen.

11th Annual MT. WASHINGTON AUTO ROAD BICYCLE HILLCLIMB - 7.6 Miles Aug. 16 Gorham, NH

Ages u19: 3rd 1:20:46 5.6 Peter Stetson, Age 50-54 1st 1:09:56 6.5 William R. Black

story submitted by Bill Black:

I had a good ride at Mt. Washington (won the 50+ and set the record). I had hoped to do more racing this year but I will have to listen to the medicos and accept what limits they put on me. One of the PVC juniors placed in the Juniors at Mt. Washington -- 3d I think in the Junior category; what a rugged day once above treeline it was 60mph winds and times were generally about 3 to 5 minutes slower. I spoke with Danielson and he did the first 1/2 in 23 minutes pacing himself and then 28 minutes for the second half; it was unbelievable how strong the wind was. Walking to the lodge at the top after I finished I was holding my bike's handlebars like a kite string with the bike being lifted off the ground -- never seen the like of it.

Story by Peter Stetson:

Did washington saturday with Charley and my Dad (all three of us made it up). I took 98th with a time of 1:20, which ended up being 3rd in the 19 and under cat. Charley went up in 1:42 and took 6th in the under 19. my dad went up in 2:15. The winds at the top were nuts! 35 steady with gusts of 60!! the fog was also so thick that you couldn't see 20 ft in front of you on the road. So, the big 22% at the end literally jumped out at you and all of a sudden there you were on top of it. It was cool though. Ciao,

Masters Nationals, Louisville, KY August 6th Crit, 9th Road race.
The first race was frustrating and disappointing because the course was not challenging enough to make people tired, so it basically ended up with a lot of people bumping, almost crashing, orange cones flying. They changed the course at the last minute from a difficult technical course to a simple, boring, flat, four-corner course with traffic beside you separated by a line of orange cones around most of the course. That made everyone feel really safe. You had to be a really fearless and nuts to fight your way toward the front of the group to sprint into a corner at full speed with traffic, cones, etc . Not a course for a championship event. Very lame and disappointing that the organizers and officials could not have come up with something better. Not to make excuses, but nobody liked it! I got 25th out of 75 or so and still had some energy left, as did most people. I think the average speed was 28.5 mph. Before both races it was scary/hard because I did not know how fast or tough they would be. I heard that the North American champ was in our road race and also the world master champ, but I wouldn't know. It was also frustrating that we had two days between the race and Louisville is not bike friendly, not bad, but no bike lanes or bike routes that we could find. The road race was completely different; it was hot, humid on a twisting, fast, technical course with three good climbs or hills that really wore people out. Imagine a technical version of the Clam Festival for 2.5 hrs with much more climbing. The group went from the start and the announcer said we did the first three laps at an average of 28mph. The hills were about the steepness of Orchard or Blackstrap, but shorter. Since there were three of them every lap and we did 11-12 minute laps it was a very demanding course combined with the heat and humidity. With the hills plus little rollers in between, and fast technical twisty corners, it was pretty much single file the whole race. The feed zone was located on a section where we were doing about 20 mph, so it was difficult to get a feed. You had to set yourself up well in advance, target a volunteer, make eye contact and grab it. Hopefully the guys in front of you didn't have the same bottle in there sights and/or didn't knock it out for you, or drop it, get in your way, etc. I missed two feed on the 7th and 8th laps, which almost put me out of the race. People were going through one bottle per lap (about 11 minutes) using to drink and cool off the body. On the 7th laps I started to get the ol' cramps in a few muscles in each leg, every lap was a different muscle, thankfully it didn't all happen at once. At that point, everything was a blur and the next thing I know was three laps to go, and I though, OK, no problem I can hang in for three laps but I eventually drifted to the back of the whittled down group of about 50 guys. I think there were two guys off the front, but due to the twisty, single file stream it was hard to see or think. On the last uphill rise before the sprint I did manage to pass about 25 guys for 27th place out of 115+/- riders (Cat 1/2/3) from all over the US. I was really satisfied with the road race since I pushed myself harder that ever before, through a lot of muscle cramps, and intensity, completing with some of the best guys in the US. The more I think about it, the more I loved the road race course ...I heard that they might have it in Louisville next year so I'll be ready. With more planning and preparation I think I could get a top ten. My excuses...hmmm, everything closed around the hotel at 5 pm, it was hard to find things to eat for under 25 dollars, subway, starbucks, everything closed at 5. So we had to do a lot of walking (too much traffic and bad roads for biking, no where to really ride for that matter except the park where the road course was, if a race was going on). I also helped feed the gearworks guys (45+ race) the night before my race. It was fun to help them (Tom Stevens, Scott Wade 3rd!, Gene Patrella (Lite Bikes team, 4th in the crit, also my roommate), all really nice guys) by the time I got back to the hotel it was about 830 and then had to walk a few blocks for dinner at 9-930. Not a good pre-race evening, but it was fun to watch those guys. The only bad thing about the road course was the lack of hay bales in dangerous spots, and a high speed corner onto a busy road with traffic in the opposite lane, again we were only separated by orange cones. The one thing that I did learn is that New England race promoters and officials do a fantastic job putting on races. First class, top notch events.

Longsjo Stage Race Fitchberg, MA 6/28-July1

Race report by Rhonda Morin- Women's Cat 4 Perspective

Highlights

*4th in GC! I was in the money! *Hotter 'en hell

*Day One - TT. Shaved 1:12 minutes off TT (thanks Jeff F. for the use of the bars).

*Day 2 - Circuit Race. Circuit Race was blinding hot. Max heartrate was 196. How did I not stroke out? Finished in peloton. Damn that hill hurts. Who cares about points? I was just trying to get up that hill.

*Day 3 - Mountain "Thank the Lord" Stage. Take that, all you sprinters! Awesome, fantastic stage. I love this part. Seven of us broke from peloton in second lap up Princeton hill, worked hard together and put more than 2 minutes on the field. We were smokin'. I took 2nd in a QOM, and should-a, could-a, would-a in another, but lost my head and forgot I could sprint
for 2nd or 3rd. The climb up Wachusett Mountain was great. My legs felt awesome. I passed two others and captured 5th!!

*Day 4 - Crit. Strategy was to tire out the leader by trying to solo break. I had a 5 second gap at one point, but it was pitifully
unsuccessful. Neck 'n neck at a money prime, but not quite enough. This is the second time this season I've been in this position. Must not be throwing the bike over the line right? Suggestions anyone? Finished in the peloton, but not the best finish. Didn't have great position going into sprint as John Grenier was kind enough to remind me. But all I had to do was finish in the pack to retain my GC position.

*I held 4th in GC by one second. So don't let anyone tell you seconds (or pennies) don't matter cause they all add up in the end. Ended with 30 points in the Verge Sprints, good for 6th place.

*PVC teammate Jen Bailey had a great finish in her first Longsjo. She finished 13th in the GC, captured 6th in the circuit & crit, 11th in the mountains and 27th in TT. She will only get better in the years to come. Expect a stage win or a GC win from her.

*Corrie Roberts and Laurie Krzywda of Maine also put in gallant efforts. Corrie snagged 27th in the mountains, while Laurie had a fantastic field finish in the crit. Corrie took a tumble in the crit with 1 to go, thanks to a wheel jump from a rider in front of her. She left a little of herself on the pavement.

From what you may have read about these races there was a horrendous crash that caused a lot of shake up in the peleton. Luckily Jim was not involved!

Country Kitchen Great Falls Criterium, Auburn, ME, 6/8/2003

Charles Goldman's race report: PVC was out in full force this past Sunday and had some excellent results! In the Junior race, the all-star team of Morgan MacLeod and Geoff Johnson teamed up to break away into a 2-man time trial after two laps into the race and held it off the entire time with Morgan taking 1st and Geoff 2nd! In the Mens Cat 3 race, Chris Karam won the field sprint for 3rd, followed closely be Ron Colavolpe in 9th. The Mens Cat 4 race had a huge turn out with five riders sporting the blue and yellow. Former Bowdin star Toby Walsh was able to hold a break away by himself for close to ten laps, crossing the line alone for 1st! Back in the main field, Geoff Johnson (that's right, the same one who had raced only a few hours before) won the field sprint for 3rd, while the remain PVC members of Chris Green, Greg Hutchinson, and Charles Goldman filled up the remaining top ten spots with 6th, 7th, and 10th; in that order. In the Womens Cat 4 Rhonda Morin and Jen Bailey worked together with Jen taking 2nd and Rhonda placing 6th. The Mens 35+ saw Graydon Stevens take 13th with Stuart Abramson following close behind in 17th. And in the Mens 45+, Graydon hammered up the hill a few more to place 6th, while Jim Shafer raced the Mens 55+, placing 10th.

Rhonda Morin's Race Report: My Goal was to finish in the pack on this one. I knew that little spit of a hill on High Street was gonna be a leg burner. Pace was fast for first 6 or so laps. I was praying for a slow down, and finally got it. Went neck and neck for the second prime and thought I had it after throwing the bike over the line, but apparently the other woman had longer arms. Drat!! Last lap the slow twitched muscled women hammered and I didn't have enough juice to hang. Finished 6th out of 7th in that lead pack. Jen Baiiley played her cards very well and was able to jump on a wheel and finished second again! Very impressive. We've got talent here on PVC. Be watching this woman!!

Sun Journal Lake Auburn Road Race, Auburn ME 6/7/03

Rhonda Morin's Race Report:: - Women's Cat 4 22 miles for Women's Cat 4. There were 26 starters and 19 finishers in my race. There were four PVC riders including Jen Bailey, Becky D. and one other woman new to racing (sorry, don't know your name). I had teammates, finally!! The pace started off pretty steady. During one smaller climb, someone swerved and nearly took others out, but I think she recovered and got back on. Somewhere out there in the hills I managed to bridge a gap with the leader who had pulled out ahead about 50 yards. Brought Jen up to her, then promptly went rubber legged and took about a mile to check back on. Thank goodness for down hills!
Lots of pain in this race. Had to work hard to get my butt up those short hills. Give me a 5 mile climb up a mountain pass anyday. Took one for the team at the sprint. Led Jen out, unfortunately too early, but still managed to help get her propelled to the front and have her take second. A great showing. Next time I'll start the sprint a wee bit closer to the line. Finished up 8 - after a little extra surge at the end with what I had left.

New England Crit Championships 06-01-03
Mens 4
Ahh, what a day for a crit! Pouring rain, cold temps, and a 35mph head wind going into the final stretch! Spring in New England...you gotta love it! PVC Junior Peter Stetson and I were the only two crazy enough to make the 3 hour long trek down to Rhode Island to race in such weather. The course was pretty technical and pancake flat, even though the finish felt like it was uphill due to the stiff, relentless head wind. The race itself was quite exciting with riders attemping to launch attacks around every lap, but due to the head wind and great work of the main pack, they were quickly realed in. With about 5 laps to go, a five man break got away and left the peleton struggling to chase through the harsh winds. The group stayed away for the finish, which left one huge pack sprint for the rest of us. Peter was able to find a good wheel and finished 11th while I got pushed out of the pack on the last turn and into the wind, finishing fairly close behind with 15th.

Chris Green and I were the only two PVCers in the huge field of 90 in what seemed to be a very laid back, almost boring race. We went 55 minutes on the mile and a quarter circut and with around two to go and an enevitable field sprint coming up for the finish, Chris and I moved forward to the front of the pack in perfect postion for the sprint; but coming into the final 500 meters, Chris was blocked by two BRC riders who gave up at the last second and found himself boxed in with no place to go. I was lucky and found a hole at the front and wound up with 4th, while Chris was able to bounce back from that mishaps and finish a strong 21st. Submittted by Charles Goldman

Sunapee Road Race, Sunapee, NH 5/17/03

Spring Season is starting to wind down and we were off to a cool start with Stuart Abramson, Andy Whelen and me in the 35+ race at Sunapee, NH. With many of the usual suspects in the 35+ field off doing the Kennedy Crit in Cape Cod this year’s race was wide open. After a couple of early breaks I went off with an Arc-en-ceil rider on the back side of the course. We were caught by Hank pulling the group along at the top of one of the harder rollers. Hank charged by with a full head of steam and the pace kept up. On the next roller Hank took seven folks off the front, including Stuart and a CCB rider. With CCB blocking on the front the group went away pretty quick and that was the break. Lap two was at a fairly easy pace as we never got the boys back in sight. I managed 5th in the field sprint for 12th overall but Stuart was the big story with 2nd place, being nicked at the line by the CCB rider. In other races Chris Karem took 3rd and Ron Colavolpe 6th in the Cat 3 race and Graydon pulled a wheelsucker all the way to the line for 2nd in the 45+. I did not get results from Chris Green to see if he improved on last week’s 8th place at Sterling in Cat 4. (Editors note: Chris Green Took 4th in Cat 4!!) Marieanne Stover may start getting pro offers as she won the Women’s race with a hard kick at the line.-- Submitted by Mike Claus

Brunswick Criterium, Bowdoin campus, Brunswick, ME 5/11/03

A nice criterium for PVC, with new club members Daven Donneley and Toby Walsh racing at the front, PVC Junior Morgan Macleod did a sick pulll for over 2 laps and almost got away for the race. He was reeled in eventually. Also taking some sick pulls was Graydon Stevenes, and Mike Laughlin. Paul Weiss Flatted lap 5....ooops, so I took some good pictures of the rest of the race!

Sterling Road Race, Sterling, MA 5/10/03

-Rhonda Morin' race report:

Cat 4 Women's Race: Warm, sunny day. Perfect racing weather. There were about 26 or thereabouts at the line - with 24 finishers. The course is mostly downhill or flat except for the lovely in-town hill which is also the site of the finish. It's a thigh burner for sure. I could definitely feel it the second time, the ol' legs reminding me what I haven't yet done for training this season.

The peloton was fairly mellow. There were no breaks to speak of. A few of us did get off the front the second time up the hill, but we slowed upenough to let others get back on, despite my protests to kick it into gear. On our last lap, we were neutralized as the Men's Master 35 passed. Just as they did and our pace car was still rolling slow, one woman went down and may have taken another for two out. I saw it coming. Her attention was being diverted, she held her water bottle in her hand, the pace had slowed considerably. All the classic signs of danger. I had dropped back away from her, cause I was weary of what come happen. Sure enough! Just then the pace car picked up and the rest of us took off.

The final sprint is a blur. I was in good position to start, but didn't have a lot of juice left to do any damage, so I just hung in as best I could. The ol' thigh muscles began to seize and that's when I decided to just finish and not try to get by anyone else. I knew the money only went 8 deep, and I probably could have caught one more rider, but since there was no glory in it, I decided to finish with my muscle still intact.

I thought I counted 9 in front of me at the finish, but the results posted that afternoon said I was 11th. A satisfactory start of the season for me. Dick Ring was all about Marianne Stover in the Women's 1,2,3. He has her going pro anytime!! Though I didn't see her race, she did very well capturing 4th place! Way to go.

Mike Clauss's race report:

The Sterling Road Race marked the first shorts, cotton socks and short sleeve race of the year and the boys in 35+ were riding fast in the sunshine. On the backside of lap 2 of 6 in this 48 mile race, CCB, Arc-en-Ceil and Graydon (if you’re wondering why GS was riding with the youngsters, there was no 45+ field) were at the front trying to split the field. The pack split up a bit but everything came together on the straightaway the next lap. Graydon took a breather till lap 4 when he went uphill into the wind and the group split again only to be pulled back by CCB setting things up for their boys. Arc-en-Ceil then sent a lone rider up the road who dangled off the front for a bit until Graydon made one last surge forcing the entire pack to go single file into the straight away 2 miles from the finishing hill. Attacks started popping off the front and coming back until about ½ mile to go when John McCone of CCB put his head down and buried himself at the front pulling teammate Randy Ruiz along to take the uphill sprint finish. While Graydon had nothing left for the finish I followed John Grenier in the uphill sprint for somewhere around 20th. Greg Hutchinson and Chris Green rode the Cat 4 for PVC but I don’t have results for those boys.

Rochester Criterium Rochester, NH 5/4/03
Five PVC-ers showed up for the first-ever Chiropractic/Papa Wheelies Crit at the Rochester Fair Grounds. The 0.5 km course was EXTREMELY technical and tight with two turns that were nearly 180 degrees, which made it pretty hard to fight your way to the front of the pack.....well, that and the numerous amount of potholes on the final stretch. Racing in the Cat 4 race were Geoff Johnson, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Green, and myself. Geoff Johnson worked hard through the 35 laps and dug deep on the final stretch for 4th place, followed close behind by Greg Hutchinson. Chris Karam also tackled the turns in the Cat 3 race and wound up winning the field sprint for 2nd place!

*One other thing, Paul, they only posted the top 5 places, so I'm not sure if anyone else raced. Maybe some of those other guys might know though.

Jiminey Peak Road Race 5/3/03
Stuart Abrahamson handled the long drive out to Jimney Peak like a pro, I got to fly copilot and we tried our luck with the 35+ field. On the backstretch of the first of 3 - 18 mile circuits a serious 10 ride move rolled off the front powered by Randy Rusk of Arc-en-Ceil. Now Randy is a Cat 1, and there was a tailwind for the break and I think everybody in the field knew that now was the time to go but those of us from 1/3 of the 120 rider field back did not have a prayer as the road was blocked from the yellow line to the shoulder with the folks at the front watching the move go. The road was wide open with long straight-aways on Route 7 so we in the pack had a grand view of the break. Stuart was in the right place and made the break, then I saw him take a couple of pulls and said to myself, “I don’t know if I would have done that.” As we quickly came to the Jimney Peak access road climb, Stuart and a couple of riders were dangling at the back of the break and then the boys really put the pressure on the hill. Stuart popped off the back of the break and met Dean Miller making a furious charge to bring the field back to the break. The Split time at the top of the hill was 20 seconds and that was the ballgame as no one but Dean had any game for chasing. The pack stayed together till the end and Dean and Stuart led out the gang to the base of the final climb. I sat in and moved up as things got steep. After a hard effort I was 3rd in line for the field sprint but did not take advantage when everyone was waiting for someone to go and ended up 5th in the field sprint (14th or so overall I think), with Stuart and Dean coming in close behind me.

Eastford road race Eastford, CT 4/13/03

PVC was back in the racing saddle on Sunday 4/13/03 at the Eastford road race in northern Connecticut. Our Cat 4 group of Mike Claus, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Green and Charles Goldman stayed with the pack through 4 laps of a narrow, twisty nine mile circuit. After a couple of riders slipped off the front early and the pack was completely uninterested in chasing, Chris, myself and several other riders made brief attacks that came for nothing and we wound up with a pack finish for placing. Chris tried to lead things out from the front and had not enough and was swarmed. I stayed right and was caught behind the women’s wheel van about 20 back. Greg stayed left and powered up the final climb for 3rd in the field sprint and sixth overall. In other races Morgan Macleod placed in the juniors as the boys were knocking elbows all across the road in an exciting sprint finish and Marianne Stover took 5th in the Women’s race (top Cat 3) with her Gearworks crew.
